Activities of Alliklik Chapter, NSDAR

Constitution Week is observed every September. The mayor’s proclamation has been secured occasionally and displays have been arranged at local libraries, banks, and savings and loans.

The DAR Good Citizens essay contest is sponsored at local high schools in the Santa Clarita Valley. Currently, four high schools are participating annually, Canyon, Hart, Saugus, and Valencia High Schools. The students, along with their parents and school counselors, are invited to attend our January chapter meeting and read their inspiring essays. Each student is presented with the DAR Good Citizens pin, certificate, and a monetary award.

The American History month has been observed with displays arranged at local libraries, banks, and savings and loans. The American History essay contest for fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students in local elementary and parochial schools are sponsored each year. The students from each school, their parents, and teachers are invited to attend the chapter’s February meeting and are encouraged to share their entries with the community.

The Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Merit Award has been given each year since the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) unit was started at Canyon High School in 1980, and now spans all of the high schools in the area. The honored cadet is awarded the DAR ROTC bronze medal and certificate at their annual ROTC Awards Banquet in May each year.

The chapter annually supports all NSDAR projects and has donated genealogical information and book transcripts to various National Society committees. In memory of our deceased chapter regents, acres of pines have been purchased in their honor.

Alliklik Chapter, NSDAR, sponsored the once-active Oak of the Golden Dream Society, Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) and proudly presented DAR Manuals for Citizenship to immigrants preparing for the naturalization test to become citizens of the United States.

In 1982, the chapter presented the DAR Medal of Honor to singer/actress Martha Raye in recognition of her service to the United States during World War II, the Korea War, and the Vietnam War. Martha entertained the troops in Africa and Europe for two years during World War II, entertained and worked with the medics for a year in Korea, and spent six or seven months every year from 1965-1971 as a medivac in Vietnam picking up wounded American soldiers and assisting in field hospitals. She began training for airborne medical work in 1969 and was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the Green Berets, Fifth Special Forces, Airborne, making her the only woman in the Green Berets with five qualified parachute jumps. Ms. Raye was wounded in action twice and has received two Purple Hearts, as well as numerous other citations from the Armed Forces.

Through the efforts of one of our members, the developers of a new housing tract agreed to name one of the streets in the development "Constitution Boulevard." The street was dedicated on September 12, 1987, in honor of the Bicentennial of the signing of the United States Constitution. The event was moderated by the senior field deputy for the county supervisor and several community groups participated in the event, including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, a military color guard, and a brass band. After the street was dedicated, bells were rung, and red, white, and blue balloons were released. The chapter regent cut the ribbon and all the participants including Uncle Sam, Betsy Ross, George and Martha Washington, Ben Franklin, Paul Revere, an American Revolutionary War rider, and a frontier explorer led by a fife and drum team in costume, paraded down Constitution Boulevard.
